(Dec. 17, 2009) The Cyrus Peirce School gym was rocking late Saturday as the varsity boys basketball team waged a comeback attempt against Easthampton in the season home opener. Despite the late effort, the Whalers came up short, losing 50-45.

“We are young, so we just have to get better and better,” head coach Beau Almodobar said. “Our goal is to get better and better every game. This is a starting point.”

The new-look Whalers (0-1) trailed by as many as 11 points in the third quarter before battling back to within two with time winding down in the fourth. But costly Nantucket turnovers and clutch foul shooting by Easthampton sealed the Eagles’ victory.

“We always start out slow. We have to find out what we are good at. We have to find out how to be more disciplined. But overall I thought they fought well,” Almodobar said.
