(Dec. 17, 2009) The boys and girls swimming and diving team combined to finish second among seven teams in the season-opening Bay Colony Conference Relay Carnival at Sandwich High School Sunday.

The Whalers earned 112 points, placing behind Nauset’s 122, but in front of Barnstable (111), Bridgewater-Raynham (58), Coyle Cassidy (56), Sandwich (33) and Scared Heart (11).

The girls’ squad also picked up its first sectional qualifying time of the season in the 200-yard medley relay, taking fourth place in 2:08.11.

“It reinforced what I thought about our team. We have on both the boys and girls side, the strong core and the numbers to back it up as evidenced by our second-place finish,” head coach Jim Pignato said.

The BCC Relay Carnival is an annual exhibition meet designed to get swimmers and divers in the pool before the dual-meet schedule opens. With a second-place finish at the relay carnival Sunday, the Whalers proved to the league that they will be a team to contend with in the regular season.
