(Dec. 23, 2009) Christian Lombardi was busy protecting the net Friday night as the junior varsity ice hockey team matched up against the Blue Hills varsity squad. The freshman goalie kept the Whalers as close as he could, dazzling the home crowed with 40 saves, but in the end the talented Mayflower League program skated away with the 3-1 victory.

It was the first taste of regular-season varsity action for the fourth-year JV program. After easily handling Abington’s junior varsity in the first game of the season last week, the Whalers played mostly defense against the Warriors Friday.

“I think because they are facing a varsity team for the first time with the opponent being able to skate around them, I think they started to panic a little bit. They weren’t able to get the puck out of our zone and when the puck is in our zone for two-thirds of the game, we aren’t going to win,” head coach Jack Moran said.
