(Jan. 31, 2013) The community is invited to the Cyrus Peirce School cafeteria Wednesday, Feb. 6 at 2:45 p.m. to celebrate as Nantucket High School senior Terrel Correia signs his National Letter of Intent to play football at the University of Massachusetts next season. The 6’7,” 275-pound Correia, who played tight end and on the defensive line for the Whalers, verbally committed to the Minutemen in July after visiting UMass this summer.

Correia, a standout on the varsity basketball team the past two seasons as well, also received recruiting interest from North Carolina State and a handful of Div. I-AA schools across New England before committing to UMass.

The Minutemen, who won the National Collegiate Athletic Association Div. I-AA national championship in 1998 and were runners-up in 2006, upgraded their program to Div. I last season. They finished the year 1-11 (1-7 in the Mid-American Conference), and played their home games at Gillette Stadium in Foxborough.
