Dolphins dominate in first dual meet of the season over Sandwich

The Nantucket Dolphins youth swim team cruised past a visiting Sandwich squad in their first home meet of the season Sunday afternoon. Nantucket earned 38 individual and 14 relay first-place finishes during the meet.


“Sandwich came over with a very small squad, with only 16 swimmers.

Nantucket had 60 swimmers competing. This was a great opportunity for our new swimmers to gain some meet experience,” head coach Jim Pignato said.


In the 8 and under division, Kayley Chitester, Gus Day, Isabelle Roberts and Tyler Wheeler all earned first-place finishes. Dakota Dragon took home two firsts, finishing the 25-yard butterfly in 21.98 and the 50-yard freestyle in 41.61.


In the 9- and 10-year-old division, Riley Fusaro, Nicholas Panchy, Henry Blackwell, Sophie Davies, Grace Jensen and Ashley Wilson all finished first in their respective events. Olivia Rand earned two first-place finishes in the 50-yard breaststroke (41.33) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:15.92) and Matias Sejersen also took two first-place finishes in the 100-yard individual medley (1:37.18) and the 50-yard breaststroke (49.13).


In the 11- and 12-year-old division, Jack Decker swiped three first-place finishes, including breaking the 30-second barrier in the 50-yard freestyle with a 29.91 finish. Decker also took first in the 50-yard breaststroke (41.51) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:07.18). Alexa Dragon nabbed two first-place finishes in the 50-yard butterfly (34.63) and the 50-yard backstroke (37.27) events. Also in that division, Alexa Crosby, Kara Garufi, Robin Gottlieb and Merrill McCluskey each earned first-place finishes.


In the 13-and 14-year-old division, Emily Hutchinson swam to two personal-best, first-place finishes in the 50-yard freestyle (27.79) and the 100-yard freestyle (1:01.52), while Carly Jensen also took first place in the 50-yard backstroke (34.51).


In the 15 and over division, Ainsley Ellis and Hunter Burnham each took home three first-place finishes. Ellis topped the 50-yard freestyle (27.39), 50-yard backstroke (31.26) and 100-yard individual medley (1:11.72) events. Burnham took home top honors in the 50-yard freestyle (26.03), the 50-yard backstroke (30.91) and the 100-yard (56.69) events.
