(Oct. 25, 2012) The varsity field hockey team racked up a pair of decisive victories this week, defeating Hull 7-1 and taking care of Sturgis East 7-0. On Sunday, however, the Whalers lost a heartbreaker to Martha’s Vineyard, which came from behind to win 2-1, and tied Barnstable 1-1 last Thursday at home.

Nantucket (11-3-1) is scheduled to play its final game of the regular season Saturday on the road against Nauset. After that, the Whalers are hoping to earn a top-six seed in the Div. 2 South Sectional tournament, which will allow them to host at least one playoff game. Seedings will be announced Monday, with opening-round games set for Wednesday.

On Tuesday against Sturgis East it was business as usual for the Whalers, who had the Storm thoroughly outmatched. The scoring started for Nantucket just three and half minutes in, when Casey Snell assisted Cara Godlesky’s first goal of the game. Ten minutes later it was Snell lighting the lamp off an assist from Sarah Clunie.
