(Jan. 31, 2013) The girls varsity basketball team took care of business on the road this week, slipping by previously-undefeated league rival Pope John Paul II 31-29 Tuesday, and beating the Mashpee Falcons 49-41 Saturday.
The Whalers (9-5, 7-1 Cape & Islands League), clinched a berth in the Div. III South sectional playoffs with the victories. They are scheduled to face Norfolk Aggie on the road Saturday, before returning home Monday for a league game against Sturgis West. Heading into Tuesday’s game against Pope John Paul – 11-0 and the only team to beat the Whalers in league play this season and last – Nantucket knew what it had to do: win.
“We practiced for two hours Monday night, watched our last game against them and had a team dinner. The girls were completely focused to get the job done and beat them and it came out the right way,” head coach Travis Lombardi said.
