The Whalers’ club hockey team saw some holiday tournament action on Wednesday afternoon at the Cape Cod Tech/Chatham Christmas Tournament.
In the first of two rounds, a short-handed Nantucket squad lost to host Cape Cod Tech/Chatham 12-4. Also this week, the Whalers lost to the same Cape Cod Ted/Chatham team 7-5 on Friday.

Nantucket (1-2) will play the loser of Wednesday's Sandwich/Dennis-Yarmouth junior varsity game in the consolation game on Saturday at 2 p.m. at the Charles Moore Arena in Orleans.

Against Cape Cod Tech/Chatham on Wednesday in the tournament, the Whalers were missing nine players, including two experienced goalies. Brian Reis put on the pads for the first time in live game action, as the Whalers took to the ice with 13 skaters.

Cape Tech/Chatham took a quick 3-0 lead, but a strong Nantucket forward line kept the Whalers in the game. Gaven Norton took the rebound off a Kevin Ramos shot on goal and sent a back-handed shot into the net for the first score. Just over a minute later Bryce Eldridge scored off a Harry Robishaw face-off to cut the deficit to 3-2 at the end of the first period.

Early in the second period Eldridge cut through the Cape Tech defense with a shifty move to put the puck in the net at 4-3. But the Cape Cod

Tech/Chatham offense proved to be too much, as they took a 7-4 lead at the end of the second period en route to the 12-4 thrashing.

Robishaw added a break-away goal mid-way through the third period. Ethan Bell and Teddy Fales played well, splitting time on both offense and defense, while Reis made 17 saves between the posts.

On Friday against the same team, Cape Cod Tech/Chatham jumped out to a 5-1 lead early in the second period. But the Whalers proved that they can still be dangerous even in the third period and rebounded to tie the score at 5-5. Cape Cod Tech/Chatham pulled away with two goals in the final minutes, including one with Nantucket goalie Ray DeCosta pulled for the extra man.

Eldridge scored twice for the Whalers, while James McIntosh, Norton and Robishaw scored once each. Devin Kohler had two assists and Taylor Thayer had one assist in the loss. Cape Cod Tech/Chatham’s Jon Rich scored five times against the Whalers and was listed on the varsity roster for the Christmas Tournament.

DeCosta had 25 saves for the Whalers.
