The junior varsity boys lacrosse team fell in its season opener 10-1 at Falmouth Saturday afternoon. The young and inexperienced Whalers struggled to contend with the Clippers’ more aggressive attack.

“A lot of my kids are not at practice every day. With the kids that were at practice, they knew what was going on and the kids that weren’t, really hurt us,” head coach Kevin Martin said.

The junior varsity team (0-1) which lost only one game last season, lost a number of skilled freshmen and sophomores to the varsity team this spring. With only two weeks of practice under their belts, and no previous scrimmages, many of the Whalers were playing in their first game and labored against a much more experienced Falmouth junior varsity team.

“Falmouth didn’t really do anything special. They were more aggressive on the ground balls than us, they played really tough defense on a real nervous and young group. Any time our attackmen would get the ball, they would just take it away,” Martin said.

Hunter Day looks to pass in the Whalers' game against Falmouth Saturday.

Playing in his first-ever lacrosse game, Carl Stevens scored the only goal of the game for the Whalers. He took the ball at midfield, ran through the entire Clipper defense and hit the bottom corner of the goal to put Nantucket on the board.

The Clippers led 5-1 at halftime en route to the victory.

Defensive captain Jon Higgins was solid on the defensive end of the field for Nantucket, Martin said. Zatrick Pinkney played well in net in the second half, splitting time with Joe Bopp, who patrolled the goal for Nantucket in the first half.

Next up, the Whalers are scheduled to face Barnstable on Tuesday on the road. In preparation for their second game of the season, Nantucket will be

working mainly on possessing the ball on offense and working for a good shot.
