The Cyrus Peirce Middle School boys basketball team fell in its home opener 45-16 to Mattacheese last Thursday afternoon.
“We started out tentative. We were a little unsure of ourselves and they were a good team,” head coach Jeremiah Splaine said.

The Whalers were supposed to open their season at Chatham on Monday, but the game was postponed due to high winds. Next up, Nantucket will play at Harwich on Friday, Jan. 4. Harwich beat Mattacheese already this year.
“We have one practice between now and our next game. We have to work on playing against a pressure defense and ball handling,” Splaine said.
Their next home game won’t be until Tuesday, Jan. 29 against Wixon.
On Thursday in the Cyrus Peirce School gymnasium, despite coming out tentatively, the Whalers kept it close early.
Mattacheese led only 19-10 after the first half. In the second half, the visitors came out, pressured the Whalers and pulled away.
“Their pressure got to us and our turnovers led to the baskets. We got a little flustered and the game got away from us,” Splaine said.
Lucas Amato led Mattacheese with a game-high 15 points.
Andrew Benson scored 11 of the 16 total points to lead the way for the Whalers. Zach Moran scored two points for Nantucket. Troy Huyser pulled down five rebounds, while Murphy Crowell had four rebounds and one point.
Cory Woolfolk gave the Whalers a spark off the bench with two points.
“We just have to find more people who can score,” Splaine said.
