Three Nantucket High School golfers participated in the 50th annual Cape & Islands Schoolboy Tournament at Bayberry Hills Golf Course on Friday.
Unfortunately, they didn’t finish as well as they’d hoped.
Taylor Thayer, Henry Toole and Riley Wynn were among the 41 high school golfers from around the Cape and the Islands who participated in the 27-hole tournament.
Thayer finished in 27th place overall, shooting a 95 over the first 18 holes and a 42 on the final nine. Toole finished right behind in 29th, shooting a 96 and a 44, while Wynn finished 36th with a 102 and a 46. Nantucket’s number-one golfer Amanda Levy, who was scheduled to play in the event, was not able to participate due to an illness.
Nauset’s Paul Ecker shot a 1-over 73 on the 18-hole main course and held on with a 40 on the par 36 9-hole links course to win the event. Cape Cod Academy’s Nick Clarke finished in second place after a chip-off with the third-place finisher, Nathan Mead of Nauset. Defending champion Tony Grillo of Martha’s Vineyard finished fourth.
“Our players did not play well. Stroke play is still our weakness in terms of format. However, each player improved from nine to nine to nine. The experience was great because the Southeast Division 3 sectionals will be at Bayberry Hills next Tuesday,” head coach Michael Horton said.
The Whalers will play a make-up match against Cape Cod Tech this week prior to the south sectionals. They will play in a stroke-play format in order to gain more experience for the postseason, Horton said.
