The softball team defeated Falmouth 5-2 last Wednesday afternoon on the road, earning its fourth straight victory to open the season against arguably the strongest opponent on its schedule so far.
Friday’s home game against Provincetown was postponed due to inclement weather and rescheduled for Friday, May 11 and Saturday’s game against Southeastern was moved to Saturday, May 19. The Whalers (4-0) were scheduled to host New England Christian Academy yesterday, too late for this edition of Sports.
On tap this week, the team will travel to Provincetown on Friday before hosting Falmouth on Sunday for a rematch of last week’s victory.
Last Wednesday against the Clippers, Olivia Hull pitched her first game of the season, going the distance and allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks while striking out nine, including five in the final two innings.
Nantucket put up two runs in the first inning. Shantel Hanniford (3-for-4, RBI, two runs scored), reached on a bunt single, stole second, moved to third on a passed ball and then scored on another passed ball. Lindsay Fry walked, stole second and scored the second run of the inning on a single by Marissa Moran.
Falmouth tied the score with two runs in the bottom of the inning on a bunt single and a few Whalers’ miscues in the field. Nantucket pulled away over the next few innings, scattering an RBI single by Molly Lentowski, an RBI double by Jess Guevara to plate Whitney Butler and an RBI single by Hanniford to score Parinda Darden.
