Ice hockey tops Avon 6-3 to finish on seven-game win streak

The ice hockey team closed out its first winning season in program history last Wednesday night on a high note, defeating the Avon varsity, 6-3. The Whalers came out of the second intermission and played a strong third period to break a tie, earn the victory and extend the season-ending winning streak to seven straight.

“It was a physical game. There was a lot on the line out there. Being our last game, we had a streak going and we didn’t want to end the season on a loss. They finally picked it up and went out there and did what they needed to do,” head coach Jack Moran said. “The third period they came out and started hitting and it made a big difference in the way the game was finished.”

The Whalers finished the schedule at 14-4-1 overall, including a 6-4 record at the varsity level and 8-0-1 in junior-varsity games.

“They did so much beyond what we expected them to do. Our goal this season was to have a winning season,” Moran said. “We went undefeated in JV games and ended up with a winning season on varsity. You couldn’t ask for more.”
