South Shore Voke hit their shots late in the game to edge the junior varsity Whalers girls basketball team Saturday 42-40.

The Whalers fell to 4-4 on the season. Next up, Nantucket will host Provincetown Monday following the varsity game.

On Saturday, the junior varsity squad was up against a team that has proven to be even competition in recent match-ups.

“Even going back to last year when we played them, we won by one and the second game went into overtime and we won by three. Saturday it was back and forth the entire game,” head coach Missy Dee said.

The Whalers were up by two points with 38 seconds remaining, but the Vikings were able to capitalize on Nantucket’s mistakes.

“The last 30 seconds we turned it over twice with bad passes that cost us the game, but overall I thought the effort was great,” Dee said.

Lindsay Fry controlled the game for the Whalers from the point-guard slot, scoring 24 of the Whalers’ 40 total points.

“She was vital to the game. I needed her on the court as much as possible, just because of her ball-handling skills,” Dee said. “With South Shore they are very aggressive and scrappy, not so much skilled offensively, but they can take you out of the game with their intensity and aggressiveness.”

In the second half, the Whalers matched the Vikings’ intensity and took the game down to the wire.

Christina Anderson played well under the basket for the Whalers with five rebounds to go along with eight points, while Morgan Tornovish was again strong on the defensive end of the court.

“All year long Morgan Tornovish coming off the bench has been a spark of fire in regards to defense,” Dee said.

Caroline Stanton also played well on the defensive end of the floor, totaling nine rebounds and three blocked shots. Emily Snell also had nine rebounds, two blocks and three steals.
