In one of the most unorthodox tournament softball games in Nantucket High School history, the Whalers lost to Harwich 5-3 in the semifinal round of the Division III South Sectional tournament last week.

The two squads got started in a steady rain in Taunton Wednesday, and following an inclement-weather suspension at the conclusion of the fifth inning, finished under sunny skies at Dennis-Yarmouth Friday. The second-seeded Rough Riders capitalized on the deteriorating conditions to score twice in the fourth and three times in the fifth to take the lead before the game was suspended. The battle continued a few days later, closer to home for both teams, but with only two innings to work with, the third-seeded Whalers failed to mount any offense and the game was over 25 minutes later.

“It was definitely not a normal game. We came out to play two innings. Usually it takes a couple innings to get adjusted,” senior co-captain Ashley Clinger said. “We came out really strong (Wednesday) and we were ahead. We fell back, but we came back strong today and it just didn’t fall our way.”
