Swimming picks up the pace at state meet

Representatives of the Nantucket boys and girls swimming and teams competed against the top swimmers in the state this weekend at the Division II State Championships at Harvard University.

Neither team placed high enough to score any points, but the Whalers improved from their performances at the Central/South Sectional meet the weekend before to lower their times in the final meet of the season.

Wayland won both the girls’ and boys’ state titles over second-place Weston.
For Nantucket, Henry Toole was the boys’ lone individual swimmer and competed in Saturday’s championship meet despite an illness.

“He definitely was not 100 percent. His two races, he was right around his seed time. It was a good overall performance,” head coach Jim Pignato said. “He wanted to see some time drop, but coming into it sick, it is difficult to swim when you are that under the weather.”
