Nantucket’s Junior Whalers hockey team advanced to the semifinal round of the Bay State Hockey’s Southeast Division Saturday with a 3-2 overtime victory against Lakeville-Freetown in New Bedford.

The action-packed game saw Lakeville take a 1-0 lead in the first on a goal by Nate Farrington. Nantucket came back to even the score early in the second on a power-play goal by Zach Almodobar with assists to Jack Moran and Ben Daniels. The score would remain 1-1 after two periods. The Whalers added another goal halfway through the third period to go up 2-1 when Ethan Lockley scored from the point on a nice feed from winger Stevie Reis.

Lakeville-Freetown answered right back later in the third on another goal by Farrington to tie the game at two.

The teams exchanged scoring opportunities late in the third but great goaltending on both sides kept the game even at 2 after three periods. This game would be decided early into the five-minute, sudden-death overtime period when Nantucket’s Codie Perry found the back of the net on a pass from Zach Moran to seal the victory for the Junior Whalers. Nantucket received stellar goaltending from Nick Ramos and Christian Lombardi, and will play Dartmouth Saturday at the Hetland Rink in New Bedford at 8 p.m. A win would advance the Whalers to the finals on Sunday.
